Microsoft Update

I heard that Vista will have better patch mechanism, installing patches will require less system reboot. Is that true? They should release some patches for the beta just to test the new update interface.
Howard

Yep - that's true. Some will require restarts, but I guess that's just down to specific products. Defender definitions won't require restarts (thank God) but that's probably been set because they'll be quite regular.

Well, I haven't had to reboot based on the updates and drivers I have installed such as definition updates or driver installs for my sound card, graphics, ethernet and modem, which is really cool. If the patches are critical, for instance, if they interact with the kernel, it might require a restart. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

So there really isn't any improvement from XP? I thought they made some changes to the kernel so that most patches won't require rebooting the computer.

Yes, they have, mainly the software ones, but device based drivers which interact with kernel are still subject to reboots. But at least the process is more effective, you can postpone, it does not automatically restart PC like it does in XP today. -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "Howard" wrote in message
